Sectional Garage

There are all types of sectional garages. A sectional garage is when someone has two or three or more different doors to their garage. The roof above the garage is usually the same and it is usually the same garage. However, there is a column, commonly matching the home, the same colors and trim, in between the garage doors. There are many reasons why someone would want to have a sectional garage. One the cardinal reasons is it could offer more room for the vehicles to exit in and out which is to reduce the chances of any fender bender. The disadvantage is of a sectional garage is that there is a chance the driver could strike that column which would not be there if it was a normal size garage door.

Sectional garages are usually appealing since the house seems to wrap around them, rendering them to be like cubby holes. Have you seen the movie Lord of the Rings? A sectional garage door looks like a Hobbit home but of course, it is a little bigger. Sectional garage doors are often decorated or at least more ornate than a normal garage door and they always match each other for semblance and aesthetic purposes. Sectional garage doors are normally and pretty much always smaller than a regular garage door. Most garage doors are designed for two cars to fit underneath them side by side. Steel sectional garage doors are generally made for one vehicle only.

Are sectional doors a status symbol? Is someone saying that I have more cars and room than you? This is debatable. The specialized and customized and really nice garage doors are the crown sectional garage doors. They are often fabricated out of wood with amazing and alluring markings and carvings. The designs on these doors are impressive. Usually more so than a garage sectional door. All these doors, as far as the research indicates, are considered or have sectional overhead garage doors. This is when a motor pulls the door upwards and backwards close to the garage’s ceiling.

Sectional garages can come with wood sectional garage doors. The color is usually, but does not have to be, a dark gorgeous stain. This is different from a steel sectional garage, which is probably designed for purposes that are more commercial; perhaps a long haul truck driver has a steel door for his sectional overhead garage. Either way, there is a sectional garage door for you; perhaps one day they will have a garage door made from carbon fiber, graphite or some other type of composite material.

Sectional Garage Doors

Garage doors today are much more sophisticated than they were in the past. Older doors are generally constructed of wood with a few metal parts. Many of these old doors were heavy and warped over time with exposure to the elements. However, today’s doors are made with different materials that are much lighter. With newer houses, building attached garages that can house multiple vehicles, safety, security and insulation have become primary factors in their construction.

Sectional garage doors were created for several reasons. Primarily, they are easy for installers to transport and fit them onto virtually any garage style, shape and size. Just as the name suggests, these doors are made in sections and pieced together with metal screws, hinges and parts. The sectional garage doors of today are made of a combination of steel and foam. However, wooden doors are still available. Wood that goes into the construction of new garage doors is treated and sometimes covered for extended durability and to prevent warping.

Since the garage has literally become part of the house itself, the Unites States Government has recognized the ability of some of the newly designed garage doors, to assist in home insulation. This form of insulation can help with energy conservation and lower heating and cooling costs. Therefore, qualifying doors can be the subject of a tax credit of up to $1,500 to any homeowner that installs one. Sales representatives can assist with locating the garage door that will properly qualify for the tax credit.

Though sectional garage doors are made for the home, businesses can benefit from them as well. With the lighter materials, these sometimes gargantuan doors are much easier to work with, especially, if they are opened manually.

The lighter materials of new sectional garage doors allow for the greater longevity of electronic openers. In fact, there are several garage door openers that have been specifically developed as a complimentary adjunct to the newly designed doors. These openers have several features that include automatic closing in case the homeowner forgets.

Not only are sectional garage doors safe, secure and great insulators against the elements, they are very stylish in their designs. With several models and looks to choose from, these doors are a nice compliment to every home. There are several door manufacturers that have created the finest sectional garage doors in the business. However, it is important to do some research on what may be best door for a homeowner. Prices can vary greatly and these doors are definitely not cheap.

Sectional Overhead Garage Doors

There are several different types of garage doors but sectional overhead garage doors are the most common used today. Under the umbrella of sectional doors, there are different types as well. There are a number of things to consider before purchasing sectional garage doors.

Types of Doors

There are three basic types of overhead garage doors – tilt-ups, single panels, and roll-up doors. The tilt-up models are comprised of one panel that is lifted into a track, which is normally mounted on the ceiling.

Roll-up doors have are made by combining several smaller sections that are joined by one unit. This type of door is held in place by a tight coil and rolls up and overhead to open.

Sectional doors are typically made up with 3-5 panels connected with hinges that roll overhead into a large coil.

Benefits of Sectional Garages

Sectional overhead garages provide weather resistant and sturdy doors with no gaps and minimal maintenance, if installed properly. The biggest benefit of sectional doors is probably the variety of designs and styles available. This makes it possible to add charm and curb appeal to your home just by replacing your dated doors.

While maintenance is minimal, sectional doors do require routine care to keep them opening and closing mechanism functioning properly. The other drawback is the overhead mechanical components do take up a significant amount of ceiling space so this would be a great option if you have high ceilings.

Materials Used to Make Overhead Doors

When shopping for your sectional garage doors it is important to know the different types of insulation available, especially if you have an attached garage and you want it to be air tight. Typically there are two types of insulation used for garage doors; polyurethane and polystyrene. Polyurethane foams are typically used as insulation for garage door panels. This is a two-part foam system, which is extremely durable. Polystyrene foam is commonly used as insulation for garage door panels as well as vapor barriers for homes. This is the most inexpensive type of foam. Polystyrene must be held in place by adhesives or inserting the foam board into the garage door panels.

Sectional garage doors are available in wood, aluminum, fiberglass, and steel. Wood doors do not hold up as well as some of the other materials. Aluminum garage doors are rust and corrosion resistant and an excellent option for homes near salt water. Fiberglass doors are extremely durable but susceptible to damage and cracking in colder climates. Steel is the most affordable and commonly used offering a high level of security and very easy to install.

Take the time to review your options when it comes to choosing a sectional overhead garage door. Not only will it improve the overall appearance of your home, you will be confident that your personal items are safe and secure.

Wood Sectional Garage Doors

Wood sectional garage doors are a magnificent addition to any home suggesting a craftsman’s careful hand played a part in constructing it. Ornately decorated, swinging carriage doors with Victorian charm embody the expected look of these doors, and today they can be bought with modern technology installed.

A sectional garage door can be made entirely from carefully chosen wood, made from wood and engineered materials, or entirely from engineered materials. For a sectional garage door with an old world look but without the high price of custom made wood doors, steel with composite materials is the best choice. However, even all wood sectional garage doors will use some composite materials to prevent wood shrinkage and rot.

Whether custom made wooden garage doors or doors from composite materials, insulation is offered to keep energy costs down and increase the comfort of the garage. Buying wood sectional garage doors doesn’t mean you will be buying manually opened swing out doors.

These true carriage doors that operate on hinges are available, but you can have an overhead operating door made of solid cedar, hemlock, or redwood, that looks exactly like the old carriage house doors.
The sectional garage technology is hidden beneath the solid wood.

The manufacturing process of wood garage doors has advanced since the days of carriages, and a wide variety of windows, decorative door hardware, and faux strap hinges are handcrafted for the industry.

Ironically, the makers of sectional garage doors have refined the process to the point where having swing out carriage doors made is more expensive than the more convenient overhead operating version available today. This is due in part to the high level of skill required to make such doors.
As with a standard roll-up garage door, a wood sectional garage door slides up to the overhead position on tracks, and can be remotely operated. Although the doors are wood (unless you purchase the steel version,) the moving parts of tracks and the supporting structure are composite materials that will resist the elements.

Weather is a major factor to consider and can cause irreversible damage to wood garage doors. To maintain the finish and protect the function of the door, wood is selected to be of the finest grade, and then treated or painted to protect it.

The installation of a wood sectional garage door is best left to professionals who have the appropriate experience. The smallest of details matters when measuring for the doors, and the labor intensive job requires precision.

Crown Sectional Garage Doors

Crown sectional garage doors are often borderline luxurious but this does not mean they are accident free. The sectional garage doors or non-sectional doors are the biggest moving item in a home. Most sectional garages are operated electronically, not unlike how you control a TV. Effective and precise installation and maintenance of a sectional garage door is necessary to conclude with error-less future operation. Any sectional garage door, if not managed or set up properly can provide deadly force when it closes. It certainly is not a toy.

Every garage door has some cautionary measures. The following list is a solid and crucial guideline all owners of electronic garage doors should obey:

• Garage doors of any nature are not toys
• You should not walk to stand underneath a moving garage door
• No one should ever bang on or abuse the door. It is unwise and someone could be mortally wounded by these actions
• Everyone should know how to use the emergency release just in case someone or a pet becomes inadvertently trapped by the door
• The electronic controlling mechanism should not be in a place where children can play with it
• It the door is manipulated by a switch or button, it should be 5 feet off of the ground or out of the reach of children

It does not matter how well built a garage door is, maintenance is required. Any time there is moving parts involved, maintenance is necessary. In this case, if the garage door does not receive proper care, if it is neglected, it could break in mid stride and possibly cause injury. If it falls from its highest point, it can certainly cause serious injury. In addition, it could come raining down and damage the car or any other items that are inside the garage. Most of the moving parts to garage doors should be checked annually but industry could be pushing for this. Regardless, garage doors should be checked up on every few years even if they appear to be working smoothly.

When you are having a crown sectional garage door installed, or any other garage door, it is customary for the installers to take away and properly dispose of your previous door. Most of the time, the installers that are mounting your new door work for the same company you bought the door from. It is not customary for you to remain at home while your new door is being set as long as they have sufficient access to the garage.
